acter that depends on the audience both feeling for him and being disgraced at his actions at various stages of the film. He’s sympathetic and hateful. His undeniable devotion to his son as the heir to the family name could have been played without words because of Kingsley’s strength.
The socked-in fogginess of the Northern California coastal setting enhances this sad but rich story- full of misunderstandings and bad bargains. There is scarcely a glint of hope in this somber tale, but the luminous performances of Kingsley, Connelly and Aghdashloo light up the screen.
In fact, Iranian actress Aghdashloo plays Nadi Behrani, Kingsley’s wife, with so much dignity and heart- that she deserves to he among those nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
In English and Farsi with subtitles, this artful film is rated R for emotionally disturbing material, racial hatred, obscenity and violence. Run time is 126 minutes.
