A hawk’s eyesight is approximately eight times sharper than that of a human’s; it can easily spot small animals from a mile away. The other hawk that sometimes can be confused with the Red-tail, is the Redshouldered hawk.
This forest-loving hawk is smaller, usually found near creeks and ponds, and hunts primarily reptiles and amphibians. It is a yearround resident here in Rappahannock. If you see a hawk sitting on a perch in or near woods, and has an orange “tummy,” it should be a Red
