The “king” of medium-size hawks, the Red-tail, is common in our area all year, but especially in the winter and early spring when additional migrants are here.
This hawk is noted for soaring in a circular motion with very little wing movement. The adult Red-tail can be recognized by the bright red-chestnut on the upper surface of its tail seen when the bird dips and turns. This characteristic coloring shows on the red-tail after one year of maturity. The adult chest/breast color shows various types of white and brown mottling.
