The Rappahannock School Board will deliver a $10,388,841 budget request to the Board of Supervisors Thursday, still unable to render final revenue estimates because of the state budget battle in Richmond.
Superintendent Robert Chappell told the members of the School Board last week that his analysis of the competing budget proposals in Richmond found Rappahannock fared well under any of them.
Nevertheless, if the historic stalemate between the Republican majorities in the Senate and the House of Delegates continues, counties across the state could find themselves in a quandary, since everything from police pay to school programs rely in part on state contributions.
Chappell told the School Board last week that Rappahannock estimated a $2,861,197 contribution under Gov. Mark Warner’s budget proposal, and $2,925,239 under the House of Delegates proposal.
He said an even higher amount — $3,145,099 — would be available if the Senate’s plan was adopted.
Chappell warned the board that these figures can change radically in the final budget bill.
If state contributions do not come up to expectations, the counties could have to increase taxes to meet costs.
