I am a Safety Engineer for
the Virginia Department of Transportation. Over the years, I have served in several safety-related positions. I have been a state trooper, a safety engineer, and an emergency response team member with the Federal Highway Administration, and I have seen many serious incidents involving citizens and highway workers.
In my capacity with VDOT, I am immediately called to any job site at which there has been an incident.
I assess the incident in an effort to determine what occurred and what we, VDOT, could do to prevent a reoccurrence.
Some incidents may be simple “fender benders,” but I know the potential is always there for multiple fatalities.
During National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 4-10, and throughout the year, I encourage you to use caution in highway work zones.
