The rising cost of health care has prompted Chappell to ask for a 1.5 percent increase in the budget simply to maintain current employer contribution levels. He estimated the cost at $140,000.
Among the $92,000 of additional “instructional enhancements,” Chappell is seeking money to provide a high school choir, jazz band, and Spanish or Latin language training. He wants a summer reading pilot program at both the elementary and high school level, and a high school course on satellite ground positioning which has become one of the most valuable military and civilian developments of the last decade.
Chappell is also seeking expanded sections of an emergency medical training program that has a $5,000 grant from Rappahannock fire departments and is designed to help recruiting for the fire and rescue services and to provide youngsters with a valuable skill for future employment.
He also has called for a 5 percent increase in purchasing school materials, and for an increase to adopt new Science textbooks and on-line course textbooks.
