Rappahannock County moved into a new and different age last week, an age that some decry and others embrace, with the ground breaking for the first cellular communications tower to be erected here in a swale behind the main building of Amissville’s Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company on Route 211.

The monopole tower, which will rise 170 feet into the air, undisguised as a tree (“monopine”) or a grain silo, will begin operation on -July 26. according to workers for ECI Wireless who this week began pouring the concrete slab and installing , the massive steel screws and bolts at the tower’s ultimate base.

The Amissville tower is the first of seven to be erected in the county, according to County Administrator John McCarthy. Six towers, operated and owned by Sprint PCS. are presently under permit; a seventh permit, for a silo on property near the Town of Washington (called the “Miller Silo”) is awaiting final clearance from the Federal Communications Commission.
