The air has gone out of the tower controversy in the time since the Board of Supervisors gave Sprint approval to build a system of seven towers in November 2001. Last year, Sprint officials returned to the county with a request to build an 80-foot-tall “monopine” tower along Route 522 south of Flint Hill. The board quickly approved it.
Looking on the bright side of the issue, Bill Dobrovir, one of the original group who fought the introduction of the towers, pointed out that the Amissville tower, while originally planned for 199 feet and ultimately downgraded to 170 feet, was under a height restriction that requires a tower to carry bright. illuminations to ward off airplanes.
Dobrovir said, “At least there wont be lights on it."
