“ This was so much prevarication, and Custer and his men knew it. Having attacked a force of unknown size and composition without immediate prospect of support, the Michiganders had been reduced to fighting for their lives; they had extricated themselves through the sheerest good fortune. Until their last minute rescue, John Morey of the 5th Michigan feared, “We- were destined for Richmond. I said to myself, ‘How are you Libby Prison?”
Days later the memory of his regiment’s near-encirclement continued to frighten Allen Rice. This line was written in his diary later. “I never want to be in as tight a place as we where in during the last battle.”
