According to State Trooper Franz Mahler, who got to the scene as soon as he got the call, “The driver took that pole right in half. The Continental shredded it.”
Swain started galvanizing the bystanders and gawkers into action. “I told one lady who was driving into town to go back to call 911 and ask for two ambulances.” She saw a van of older people whom she told to drive down to the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire & Rescue for another ambulance.
“The car was steaming,” said Swain. The driver, Hockman, and her mother, Guy, were conscious but dazed. Their air bags had exploded, and they were frightened, according to Swain.
“I got the driver (Hockman) out of the car before the electrical wires dropped on the car,” said Swain. “My main concern was their falling and trapping them.”
It was Trooper Mahler’s concern, too. “The only thing that kept the electric pole up was the wires,” he said. “If a wrecker had taken the car away, the pole would have fallen on the road.”
