The one and only 4th of July celebration open to the public in Rappahannock County was held Sunday at the Rappahannock Recreation Center, which was decked out with flags, bunting, red, white and blue balloons and warm greetings from the sponsors, the Rappahannock County Democratic Committee.
Billed as an “Old-fashioned Community Picnic” some 120 persons enjoyed the festivities including Republicans and Independents alike.
Lunch from the grill included hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers and veggie burgers and as guests lunched, John Philip Sousa’s patriotic band music filled the air.
Lee Bird of Washington gave a moving address on the background of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence and what happened to them afterwards. Some were captured by the British as traitors, others tortured before they died. Homes were ransacked and burned.
Take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots,” Bird told the guests. “It’s not much to ask for the price they paid.”
