Looming county government budget cuts may have saved the Town of Washington from losing several county agencies to the highway near the Rappahannock National Bank.
The Board of Supervisors voted Monday to hold a public hearing on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. to allow public comment on the proposed purchase of the Washington Arts Building at the comer of Gay and Jett streets from Peter Kramer. It is to be used as additional county government office space for the health department, social services and registrars office.
Washington Town Council member John Sullivan said “that's great news” upon learning of the proposed purchase.
Losing the county offices could have altered the balance of tip fees derived from EDUs, or Equivalent Discharge Units, for the new sewer system. It would also have left the town with still more vacant building spaa1.
