Tam writing in response to -LMr. Ebom’s Letter to the Editor of Jan. 29 entitled “This is a Christian Nation.”

Without arguing over whose religion has the TRUTH and whether or not that is an exclusive quantity; let us examine the United States of America, a geopolitical entity, and the statements, laws and creeds under which it was established and continues to exist: things like the Constitution and its attendant documents.

I was bom into this life as an American and was taught that the principle of freedom of religion was a basic reason for establishing, and also an established tenet of) our Political Organization. I was also taught that in order to insure such high- » minded ideals as allowing anyone and everyone to believe what they chose and to practice whatever spiritual practices they desired without prejudice or favoritism there would be no adoption of a particular religion or religious practice by the government. That was done, it seems to me, because doing otherwise would lend the he to the ideals which we had boldly espoused.

Here I am, along with many others of a vast variety of beliefs, creeds, and spiritual practices, living in a geopolitical division of the global community affectionately called “America” and I am being told by some of my neighbors that this nation, also known as a geo-political division of the global community as well as being known as a country is Christian and what’s more; that to be Christian is to be a member of the only TRUE religion and that that religion is the religion of the land.

Regardless of what your belief is about your own relationship to the vast mystery which we are all a part of regardless of the teachings of the institutions behind them if any, it would seem inappropriate and, at the very least, demonstrative of a narrow mind, to proclaim, in a country explicitly created to provide for freedom to worship to all as they see fit
