“endorsing a pagan religion” by writing a story about a new spiritual group in town? I don’t get the connection, Mr. Torrance. And as an earlier writer has pointed out, how could it be a hidden truth if the Web site was included in the article? I mean, you gotta concede that one, don’t you?
And it seems to me that Mr. Pagano may have overreacted a bit to Mr. Torrance’s rhetoric. All of us have probably been intolerant of intolerance now and again.
But it is Mr. Ebom’s thinking that compels me to enter this very frayed fray. For as articulate as it sounds, it seems to me that it is based upon some questionable premises.
(By the way, the Unitarian/Universalist creed certainly emanates from a long and important • Christian tradition. Four United States presidents have been Unitarian. Unitarians simply did not believe in the Trinity, so to many they couldn’t be “true” Christians, but to themselves, they were the “true” Christians. The old joke about Unitarians was that when they die they come to a crossroads. One sign points to “Heaven”, and another sign points to “Discussion Group about Heaven.” They head for the discussion group, of course. I have found that Unitarians are not offended when I tell them this joke. They tend to be very tolerant folks....)
Anyhow, that gets us to “the truth.” Mr. Ebom says that “truth, by definition, is exclusionary. There is only one truth, or there is no truth.” Well sir, I think your premise is faulty on that one.
I don’t know where he found that definition, but it wasn’t from the English language. My learning tells me “truth” is a matter of belief. Some beliefs can be proved and quantified scientifically. Others, like spiritual or metaphysical beliefs, are matters of faith. Each human is a complication of knowledge, beliefs, instincts, experiences, complexes, contradictions, passions, and yes, “truths.” Each human has a wagonload of “truth.”
And I have never encountered that “bill of goods” that says “we must sacrifice our convictions and give equality to that which contradicts our core beliefs.” In fact, I don’t know any
