In 9 nation based on the coming together of a vast variety of ideas and cultures, the public voicing of such a personal belief may be acceptable as free speech yet it does not free such statement from the valid criticism of being at the very least intolerant and brand the speaker as such as well.
Mr. Ebom would have us believe that the use of the term bigot was misapplied and not applicable in the original criticism. Perhaps you would like to judge for yourselves. From a well used copy of Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary we find: Big-ot - one obstinately or intolerably devoted to his own church,* party, belief or opinion. I'm not sure the shoe could fit much better.
Mr. Ebom would also like us to accept that words are just words and their meanings are only literal. No word is spoken without a context. The context within which the word “pagan” was used was not one of literality. The other thing about words that are written is that they are subject to the reading and interpreting of someone else. When I read the word as it was used, it spoke to me, as words do, in the tone of an epithet.
I say again that it is sad indeed when the publishing of perfectly valid local news in our local newspaper (the announcement of a new formation of a Unitarian Universalist congregation) is taken as the need for someone to proclaim publicly their intolerance of another’s beliefs and call for others to avoid and shun the alternate creed as well as the hapless publisher who has brought such alternates to our attention. If my sadness at such an occasion is an expression of intolerance as asserted by Mr. Ebom then so be it. I do find intolerance to be abhorrent.
