Naoko Takao, a lovely Japanese-born pianist, returns to the Theatre at Washington, Virginia, for what has become a keenly anticipated annual recital on Saturday, March 28 at 8 p.m.
The first half of the program includes “the humorous side of Beethoven” as evidenced in his Sonata in A Major, Op. 2, No. 2. This will be followed, in Takao’s words, by “the light-hearted melancholy of Rachmaninoff transcriptions.” The transcriptions are Liebeslied of Kreisler-Rachmaninoff and the Scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream of MendelssohnRachmamnoff.
After the intermission, there will be four works by Frederic Chopin: Barcarole, Op. 60; Mazurka, Op. 50, No. 3; Nocturne, Op. 27, No.2 and Polonaise-fantaisie, Op. 61. Takao writes that this is her “all time favorite Chopin selection [and includes] three works from his late compositional period.”
Takao enjoys an active career as recitalist, orchestral soloist and chamber musician in the United States and abroad. Since coming to this country in 1984 she has received many awards and scholarships, including the gold medal in the 2000 San Antonio International Piano Competition.
