Plan Road Improvement
J. E. Johnson, resident highway engineer, was present at the board meeting Wednesday morning, May 3, following the requirement of annual consultation between the highway department and supervisors and citizens.
Roads and bridges listed for improvements include the following:
Part of Route 600, north of Sperryville; Route -621 from near Woodville to the F.T. road at Buckners Corner; Route 658, 1V4 miles off 618 about 1 mile from W'oodville; Routes 618 and 649 from near Laurel Mills to near Estes; Route 611 about 1 mile, and Route 643 near Amissville; Route 630 west of 522 near Hittie’s Run, and part of Route 637 east of 522, poining 522 near Hit-tle’s Run; Route .634 at Chester Gap; Route 620 about 114 miles east of Five Forks in Hampton district. Bridges scheduled for repair include: on Route 614 north of Smedley; on Route 621 north of Five Forks; on Route 615 over Biackwater Creek; on Route “633 over Battle Creek; and on Route 626 at Rock Mills. If funds are available, the following road im« provements are scheduled: Route 622 from 625 through Harris Hollow to where 614 joins, north of Smedley; Route 707 from F. T. oad to Madison line; Route 626 from Rock Mills north to intersection of Route 627; and Route 605, .7 mile at Slate Mills.
In the public discussion on needed road improvements) many citizens were present explaining the situations of road conditions and requesting repairs. “Big Charlie’.’ Jenkins was most frank in starting that as long as the road was good as far as his gate, it didn’t matter about the rest. E. M. Jones refrained from duplicating “Big Charlie’s” opinion, on the Fodderstaek road, for Mr. Jones said he sometimes traveled the road beyond his gate.
Engineer Johnson explained that the requests made by the board were of foremost consideration and that such requests were followed insofar as funds and priority made it, possible. He quoted General Anderson in stating that the department of highways desired to have every road passable and that everyone should be able to use the roads the year-round.
