1950 Corn War Underway

“Virginia started this thing, and I’m determined that we are the ones who will end it. Anyway, growing all the corn we can on one acre is something we ought to be doing.’’

That’s the challenge from North Carolina’s Governor W. Kerr Scott to Virginia's corn growers this year.

The challenge was accepted by Virginia’s Governor Battle, and the 1950 corn war is on, with Dr. Paul Sanders, editor of The Southern Planter in Richmond, as the State corn committee chairman.

At VPI, Extension Agronomist P. H. DeHart has this to say:

“A 50-bushel corn yield in 1950 should be the goal on every' Virginia farm. The State yield in 1949 was 47 bushels per acre—a record yield—'but it still means there are lots of acres of corn in Virginia that produce less than 50 bushels. ’

“Our goal last year was a 10bushel increase on every farm. The final result was an increase of only 4 bushels in the average state yield. This was an excellent record and Virginia farmers are to be congratulated. But let’s not rest on o>ur laurels and let the Tarheels win in 1950.

“If you are producing 75 to 125 bushels of corn to the acre, and know it pays, why not do a little missionary work in your neighborhood and talk to those who are making low yields—get them to adopt? the slogan of ‘50bushel yield in 1950.’

“Higher yields will mean less land plowed, less labor, lower feed costs, and a large acreage of land released for usp in pasture and hay. Corn yields in Virginia have increased 14 bushels per acre during the last 15 years. Let’s keep up'the good work—and beat North Carolina again this year.”

Program A* Sperryrille

The May Day-Health Day Program of Sperryville High School will be held in the auditdfium tomorrow, Friday, May 5, at 1:30 p.m. The public is cordially invited and there is no admission charge.

Much time and effort have been put into the program and those in charge are assured tha* the May Day will be prettier than usual this year.
