The number of turkey poults hatched in the Shenandoah Valley area is up 73 per cent over last year for the season to date April 1. Through April 1, 643,000 poults were hatched compared with 372,000 by the same date a year ago, according to latest figures from the Virginia Division of aMrkets. Turkey eggs set for hatching the week of April 1 totaled 259,000 in the Valley area compared to 192,000 a year ago.

Egg production through March continued at high levels. Farm flocks in the U.S. averaged 6 per cent more layers than a year Ago, and they produced 5 per cent more eggs, or 6.4 billion during the month. Egg prices in March averaged about 25 per cent below last year, a relationship which is not expected to change much in the next few months. The average price so far this year is 32.9c after adjustment for seasonal variation. This is substantially below the egg support price goal of 37c average for the year, 1950.

Chicks and young chickens of this year’s hatching on April 1 were 8 per cent more than a year ago and 20 per cent above average. The South Atlantic States showed a 15 per cent decrease in holdings compared with a year ago. Holdings in the East North Central and West were the largest on record for the month, and accounted for much of the gain over last year.
