He was an American military leader, who sained the title of "Roclt of Chicamauga,” for his steadfastness in one of the most desperate battles of the War of Secession.
He was graduated from West Point in 1840 after which he fought against the Seminole In* dians in Florida.
Front 1861 to. 1854 he served as instructor of the National Military Academy.
In 1864 he was promoted to be -major general in the„ regular— army.—.— ..___
He commanded military departments in Kentucky and Tennessee after the war until 1869.
In 1864 he enlisted in Hood’s army at the Battle of Nashville.
