According to Virginia retail fur Auyer report* for the past fiscal year on file with the Game Commission, local trappers sold $408,845 worth of wild-trapped furs on the Virginia market. Muskrat topped the list with 169,293 pelta bringing $273,664. There were also sizeable returns in opossum, fox, raccoon, wildcat, think, otter, skunk, and weasel.
Miss Lillian Layne, chief of the Commission's Fiscal Division, cautioned that these figures are based on reports from buyers and are not always entirely accurate. Bhe also stated tha this fior take reps- resented a healthy addition to thd economy of the State, but that it did not Show the total amount received from Virginia’s fur resources. Many thousands of dollars worth of pelts were shipped | by the trappers directly to out-ofstate buyers and there were nd reports on these transactions. She said that there have been estimates showing a million dollar Virginia fur trade. $ Trappers of the‘Old Diminion say that good supply of animals were trapped" last year but that the prices were the lowest in sev' eral seasons. Some fur houses express the opinion that lowered l price* are due to an, influx of Russian imports to North America since the last war. .The Bureau of ..
