Carver High School

In April the Agricultural Department ef Carver Regional High School sponsored a forestry conference in Culpeper county in cooperation with the Virginia Forest Service for the benefit of improving forestry practices among farmers in Culpeper, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties.

Mr. Henry Bashore, of the 'Virginia Forest Service; presented a movie and lead a discussion on Preventing Forest Fires and general forestry practices before a crowd of farmers, veterans in agricultural training and agricultural students in the auditorium of the school.

Observations of improved thins ning of shortleaf pines were made on the forestry plot adjacent to the school.

After lunch in the school cafeteria, the group assisted and observed

refergMjjttion of a cut-over area on the'tf&m of H. Gordon lightfoot, a veteran in Institutional-On-The-Farm Training. Two thousand shortleaf and loblolly pines were set out with the aid of Mr. S. G. Hobart, Chief of Forestry Management Virginia Forest Service, and Mr. Henry'Bashore, Virginia Forest Service. These two thousand trees were set out by the veterans in two hours, which was, according to Mr. S. <*, Hobart, a record time.

A. C. Washington was chairman of this program, assisted by O. R. Johnson and C. L. Conyers, all agricultural instructors at Carver Regional High School.

Greensville Farmer

Receives Certificate

James Tucker, of Greensville, county, has been named the first Negro farmer in Virginia to receive the “Tree Farmer” certificate. , 4 The certificates are given in recognition of outstanding woodland management.
