The VPI Agronomy Department says “Plants Can Talk,”*'to quote, “Plants will tell us when they are hungry through signs of their own. A stunted, pale, green, or -yellow eern plant is telling us something is wrong. It may need some plant food or the soil may be wet. A pasture that has mostly broom sedge and poverty grass is telling us that the land is so poor, nothing else will grow unless certain plant food is added. Alfalfa that turns yellow may need potash or boren or the soil may be poorly drained. It may be a disease like black stem or insects like the green aphids may be sucking the plant’s juices. There are many other signs that will tell us something is wrong. Let’s look for these signs and check on insects, diseases, and poor drainage, but let’s make sure it is not starvation. A squealing pig with prominent ribs and backbone is a good sign of starvation and a good hog raiser will not let these signs develop, A crop can’t squeal, but it c%i talk . , . with sign language, anjl a good farmer will give bis soil enough plant food so these sigifs >1 starvation will not develop. New fertiliser recommendations for alfalfa are: Apply enough lime to give a soil PH of 6.6 to 8.8. Have soil tested to find out the amount needed. The plant food needs may be provided .with one of these two methods:
1. Plow under 12 to 15 tons or medium sise spreader loads of good quality stable manure to the acre to which has been added 500 to 600 lbs. of 20% Superphosphate or its equivslent and 20 " lbs. of borax. Additional application of 500 lbs. of borated 0-1020 at time of seeding will be beneficial to some soils. The use of tills quantity of manure will add about 80 to 100 lbs. of nitrogen which is not needed by the alfalfa and for this reason, it may be better to use this manure on corn or grass land, and, use the method suggested below for getting the plant food.
2. Use 1000 to 1200 lbs. of borated 2-12-12 or equivalnet per acre. Some soils which are very low in plant food may need more phosphoric acid or potash. These may be applied as Super-phosphate or Muriate of Potash or in a mixture such as 0-10-20. Plow under half of the fertiliser and lime; then apply other half o4 both at seeding.
Top dress old stands each year •with 600 to 1000 lbs. per acre of borated 0-10-20. This may be applied immediately after first or second cutting or during dormant season. (December through February.) i
