Friday** Evening Star earned a letter from some character who claimed Washington, Georgia, as the first Washington. Some one is going to write to that gentleman. He's more than likely going to be 4eld that, no doubt, Washington, Georgia, was the first Washington incorporated (1780), but 31 years before that auspicious date, according to the diary of • 17-year-old surveyor, err> ployed by Lord Fairfax to survey Culpeper county, he “traveled . . . and there in the foothills, laid off a torwn.” The town was named for the young surveyor—and he was not famous as “Father of His Country” at that time. Two of the streets today bear the names of two young ladies who were acquaintances of the young George Washington.
Georgia may lay its claim to the first incorporated Washington, hut Rappahannock dounty, Virginia, claims that its county seat is “The First Washington of All.”
