By Janet Sollenberger 1 Next week, August 1, through 4, three women, along with the Home Agent, will attend the Rural Institute of Affairs at Blacksburg. These women are: Mrs. Doris Coughlin of Castleton H. D. Club; Mrs. Mabel Racer of Washington H.D. Club; and Mrs. Jessie Rowzie of the Washington H.D. Club. There are two other H.D. members going to the Institute with their husbands, they are Mrs. W. H. Lyne and Mrs. C. M. Ramey. For the past two years all the women. that have attended this Institute have had a most wonderful time. The theme of the week within itself suggests a most interesting week. It is “The Virginia Farm Family at the Mid Century.'* There is still room in the H.D. Agent’s car for one or two H.D. members. If any of you decide at the last minute to go, get in touch with her. We guarantee a most interesting aad wonderful time.
Last week the Flint Hill 4-H club 'held an all-day meeting -at the home of Mrs. Frank Cary. In the morning the summer club contest was run off. -It <was a hard job deciding which one had done the best work, because all had done so well this summer, but there had to be a decision, so the following were the winners:
1st in Meal Planning, Preparation and Service was Bonnie Gentry.
1st in Room Improvement was Tiny Gentry.
1st in Clothing Construction was Paula Miller.
Girls winning rtbjjgna for the cake and cookies they brought to the meeting were:
Blue ribbon—Tiny Gentry for the best cake.
Red ribbon—Sarah Flythe for the second best cake.
Yellow ribbon — Tiney Goode for the third best caker-— —
Betty'Corbin and Tiney Goode received blue ribbons for the best cookies.
SperryVille 4-H club had an afternoon meeting July 18th, and went on their annual picnic and swimming party. Everybody had a good time. The day before the club met at the home of Mrs. Lucio Kilby. She had a most interesting meeting planned for the girls. They made cookies and cakes. The good things they made at the club meeting were saved until the next day for the picnic. The cookies and cakes were all -very delicious.—The
Flint Hill H. D. 'club met at the home of Miss Ruth Stevens, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. This was a very nice meeting. A large group was present. A tentative program was set up by the club for 1951. It was decided that the September demonstration would be on “Meat Cuts and Cooking." Then -'5 different salads were demonstrated by the agent. The hostess served along with these salads a delicious refreshing minted lemonade.
Amissville 4-H club had their last all day meeting for the summer at the home of Mrs. Ralph Rowzie on July 19. Jo Ann Zinn, won first in the club clothing construction contest. Nancy Zinn was second, and Kathryn Carter iwas third. The two girls winning out in the “Food Preparation" club
