The home is less the self* contained unit of our culture that it once was. The church and the school—the other members of our cultural and spiritual triumvirate —are alert to the need for compensatory processes. They are studying the child spiritually "and psychologically with a fresh concentration.
The Virginia Section on Mental Hygiene of the Midcei^tury Conference, for one group, seeks to incorporate mental health training in the curricula for teachers. Commissioner Joseph E. Barrett of the Virginia Department of Mental Hygiene suggests a brief interneship for teachers in mental hygiene clinics that work closely with the schools. It is by studying the small percentage of children who “withdraw” at school, or show signs of early hostility upon the first impact (with our culture outside the home, that we shall broaden the whole understanding of childhood and youth in the decades ahead. For these are the failing and the sensitive ones who are the social barometers. They will help us find the compensations we seek for changes in the social structure that affect youth. Each new generation must see itself in the eyes of hte older one in the maturing process, and for this reflective vision tehre is no substitute.
