Iwill support the President in all necessary appropriations lor the military. I will support reasonable and practical measures to control inflation.
I am very disappointed that the news papers today report the President has requested Senator Lucas, the Sente Leader, to oppose reductions in non--defense expenditures. The President should realize that financial preparedness and the ability to pay are the source of all preparedness. Wit^ colossal new expenditures facing us, we can’t preserve our solvency unless we reduce in every possible way non-defense spending. k
In 1948 we expended more than six billion for domestic-civilian expenditures, exclusive of the mil-* itary, of interest on the debt, veterans ‘expenses and foreign aid. The President now recommends approximately $12 billion for domestic, non-defense spending. So spending for non-defense purposes has neatly doubled within this peiiod,
I hope the President will reconsider his decision and cooperate with the Congress in reducing non-defense spending.
