Mr. Harrison’s vote in thd county of 603-94 can be compared with 869-252 in the election two years ago, when "his opponent was Timberlake. The comparison seta only 324 votes difference between a presidential and non-presidential election year, and also shows that Harrison’s majority this year ^was^ higher proportionatfly. than two years ago, by about 2 per cent.
Mr. Harrison carried every city ■and county in the Seventh District including traditionally Republican Page. The district includes the counties and cities of Amherst, Augusta, Bath, Buena Vista, .Clarke, Frederick, Highland, Harrisonburg, Nelson, Page, Rappahannock, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Staunton, and Warren.
Representative Howard W. Smith from the neighboring Eighth District won easily over Republican Tyrell Krum who carried Arling, ton county but lost out in the district. Smith defeated Krum with a slightly higher majority than that polled in 1948.
Democrats won the five contested Congressional seats in the state by wide margins.
Both amendments to the State Constitution were passed, though not without some opposition. * The ax fell throughout the land <m Democrats,— Luc**, Tydingei Myers, and many others (including Mrs. Helen Gahagan Douglas), and the new Senate will see a Democratic majority “by the skin of the teeth,” 49-47. Some unofficial returns say 30 House seats were gained by Republicans, while conservative estimates say 25. -

Following a concerted campaign to emphasize the importance of voting, a total of about- 110,000 votes were cast in the state as compared with about 224,000 in the 1948 presidential election.
Child Hit By Truck
Joe Brown, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Brown of Sperryville was hit by a truck Sunday morning as he crossed the road near Reynolds Memorial Baptist church, on his way to Sunday School. Dr. Snead rendered aid and Joe is reported to be resting comfortably at his home. The boy was cut, bruised, and badly shaken up. *
It appears to have been an unavoidable accident and no charges bave been listed against the driver.
