Early last year oar Agronomy 'Committee, consisting of H. S. Barksdale, J. W. Fletcher, C. M. Ramey, Earl Kilby, and L. B. Henretty, went to work to get a -better ^eed Saw governing the quality of hybrid seed com offered for sale. Just recently the following "Amendments to Field and “Vegetable Seed Law’* were received at the county agent’s office:
1. Label Requirements:
(a) Origin, if known, of orchard grass, alfalfa, and red clover seeds. If the origiq is unknown, the fact shall be stated. (Heretofore the origin of orchard grass seed was not required.) - IL Amendments Pertafiiing to
Hybrid Cora: ... _1, TKe amendments dealing with - hybrid corn are many and farreaching. Under the first section of the law entitled "Definitions,* the following words or terms are defined: "hybrid seed t«orn," "description- of a corn hybrid,” “nonCoded,” "pedigree," "commercial hybrid seed corn,” "open pedigree hybrid,” dosed pedigree hybrid” ...and "certified seed.’ _
2. In addition to the usual label requirements for all field seeds, hybrid seed corn which germinates less than 90% much show on the label the words "Below Standard in Germination.”
3. Certification is required for all open pedigree hybrids. (Open pedigree hybrid means a hybrid for which the pedigree is generally known and for which tbp .seed stocks to produce that hybrid are generally available to the public in quantity.)
