There are now 11,383 hardsurfaced miles on Virginia’s secondary highway system, as compared with 2,000 when the State took over the system in 1332, the State Highway Department reported this week.
In a breakdown showing the status of the secondary system as of July 1, thf department noted that - 24,084 miles have a stone, gravel or. soil surface and that only 4,580 miles are unimproved or unsurfaced.
In 1932 there were 8,900 miles with a stone or gravel surface and 25,000 unimproved or unsurfaced miles._ _
The secondary system—with a total mileage of 39,046—is made up of farm-to-market, school bus, RFD and connecting routes formerly administered by the counties. They, were taken over by tbe State under the Byrd Road Act of 1932. — Secondary routes are identified by numbers of 600 or higher.
