The County of Rappahannock in the Piedmont Section of Virginia is unsurpassed in* mountain scenery. It was here in the foothills S of the Blue Ridge, during the war .between the States, the invading General Pope (while camped upon this sacred soil,) in a letter to his wife wrote “Owing to military' expediency, I cannot disclose to you - my location, but I iwill say I am1 -in the Switzerland of America.” When Pope later met Lee in the Second Battle of Manassas, where •whis troops were near annihilation, %t is to wonder, if Pope in his after reflection could appreciate any beauty whatever in Virginia, even those beautiful though rugged scenes from his old camp in the “Switzerland” of Rappahannock . and those mountains “rock ribbed and, ancient as the sun.”
In order to know and better ap-. preciate the origin of the County v of Rappahannock, it is interesting to note the subdivisions made in one of the eight original English Shires, in order to form therefrom other Shires in Virginia and from these further subdivisions 'were made, fhieh, after we obtained our Independence from England, were designated Virginia Counties, s To avoid confusion all such subdivisions will hereafter be referred to as counties. ,
One of those eight original ’ English Shires, of (which the County of Rappahannock is now a part, was formed in the year 1634 and first called CharJ*yjbRher Shire, named for King Charles I, of England.
