On the strength of Mr. Smith,'* proposal, the chamber's board last week named him to head a Statewide drive under this simple plan:
Each of the 'State Chamber1* present members has been invited, to enroll at least one new member between now and the 27th annual membership meeting at Roanoke April 18-19. Those who accent the invitation are supplied with lists of the names and addresses of prospective new members of comparable standing in their own commu■ nities. In addition, each of the volunteers in the drive is supplied with material outlining the chamber's current program and services, together with membership application blanks.
Although no concrete quota has been assigned to any of the volunteers, the overall goal of the campaign is to raise the organization’s annual budget from $150,000 to ,$250,000 and to boost the membership rolls from 4000 to approximately 5000.
Need for the expanded budget was voiced by President Kelley in the January issue of the Virginia Chamberlog, quarterly bulletin for members of the organization. " He pointed out that- basic dues ~ are at the same minimum rate which prevailed when the chamber was first organized in 1924. Despite this fact, Mr. Kelley noted, the opportunity and necessity for enlarged services offer a growing challenge in the face of rising costs for equipment and office supplies, expanded office space and additional personnel.
Among the “imperative*" which he listed as responsible for larger budget needs were these:
