' (By Ruth G. Duffy) Women, in general, have jester rights and larger benefits tin-— der the NEW Social Security program. This applies to wives, widows, mothers, and to the woman as a worker providing for -the family.

Heretofore, the wile of a retired and insured worker was not entitled to monthly payments until she became 65. Now, if she ha^ a minor child in her care, she geta monthly payments, regardless of her age. Also a mother caring for the minor children-of her deceas- v ed divorced husband can now get monthly payments. However, she must have been receiving at, least half her support from thp divorced husband at the time of his death.

The new provision » granting wage credits for service in World War H will also bring new benefits to many women. It will en-4 liable many widows of servicemen to qualify for survivor’s benefits.

A woman worker now , has greater protection for her children. Under the old law, payments based on her work could not be made to her dependent children if the father iwere living in the home. This was true even though the - mother was providing all or most of the children^, sppporjj. Now . children may receive benefits if they were receiving half their support from her, or if she were currently insured when «he retired - or died.

Women, as workers, now have a much broader field in which to gain a livelihood with old-age. and survivors insurance protection. A Tegular domestic employee in private homes now comes under so* ,, cial security. This-is a type of work in which women predominate. Also, many women work for themselves, and will have protection under the self-employment provision of the new law. j| ’
