PHILADELPHIA—It is difficult to imagine that 200 years ago there w^reru’t any -institutions in America that specialized solely in the care and cure of the sick.
Only in an almshouse,..where Charity cared for the poor, iwere public attempts made to arrest sickness. These were usually isolated instances, generally to halt spread of contagion.
It w a s n’t u n t i 1 Benjamin Franklin heeded the plea of DiC Thomas Bond, a prominent colonial physician, tl.^it th\p first hospital was established — the Pennsylvania Hospital, chartered on May 11, 1751, by an act of the Colonial Assembly.
