Somewhere in the future—near, it to be hoped—is a dollar with a good-luck four-leaf clover on it. Its good-luck mark may not be visible, hut it is there.
That doMar is the lucky one which paid for the final piece of cancer research. I would like to think it is the one I gave.
For years mankind was cursed with small-pox. The scourge swept across the' lands, leaving misery and sorrow. Finally, it Iwas defeated, and the horror of smallpox today is non-existent. Somebody spent a dollar wisely, invested in research, and a dread disease was wiped out.
Sometimes we become discouraged. No doubt, while smallpox spread, uncontrolled, throughout the land, there were people who said that there could be no cure. Today, we hear voiced man’s despair over the curse of cancer. Insiduously, cancer is truly the plague of the times.
But somewhere, some time, that dollar with the four-leaf clover is going to turn up. Perhaps it was given during the month of April, 1951, in the annual cancer drive to provide funds for continued research; perhaps it will be given within the next few weeks; perhaps we may have to wait until next year before it i$ given. Perhaps it is in the gifwhich someone failed to give, and that dollar may 'be lying, doing nothing, in some bank account or in some pocket, when it should be working with a cancer clinic or a research laboratory.
