Soil Saver Notes

Irrigation as an insurance against dry weather is gaining in popularity in Culpeper and Rappahannock counties. Where an adequate water supply is available or sufficient water can be impounded by means of ponds, irrigation has practical application on many farms in this area.
Soil samples iwere taken this week on Mt. Vernon farm at Sperryville, owned by J. Clifford Miller, Jr., and on North Cliff farm, Rixeyville, owned by Melville Church, II. From the soil samples, various tests will be run to determine the rate at which the water may be applied to the soil by, the irrigation sprinkler system. This information is necessary to properly design the irrigation system. Glenn Wilson, soil technician, assisted by L. B. Henretty, local soil conservationist in collecting the samples. The tests will be conducted in the laboratory.
