I managed to observe the family by concealing myself in a clump of alders within a hundred yards of the boat.
One day the cubs were snuffing the base of the pine tree. A squirrel, 'busy in its upper reaches, cut loose a cone which plummeted earthward, landed on the rear end of one of the foxes, and stuck. No dog with a can tied to its tail ever went through more comic antics. The fox pup, leaping into the air, wheeled and spun like a lervish until one of his gyrations released the cone. It landed some six feet from him. All the pups, clinging together, regarded it with high suspicion. Crouching on their bellies, waiting for it to move, they were ready to take flight the moment it did. Finally the cone’s lack of pugnacity lulled their suspicions. Advancing slowly, inch by inch, they drew to within a paw’s length of it. Then one of the pups, in a surge of boldness, pounced. The cone became their plaything for the day.
Few wrild animals outshine the father fox in fidelity to wife and young. He shares the proceeds of the hunt. A vigilant guardian, he resorts to ruse and decoy when dogs or other enemies draw too close to the nursery burrow. He now becomes an actor who really knows how to ham it up when he brings the spotlight to himself by cavorting, barking, and feigning injury until the invader is lured to safer territory.
Foxes are the goal of fashionable hunt clubs riding to hounds, and one-ga'lus hunters who turn loose their dogs, then cock appreciative ears as they listen to the pack doing its brag best.
