Appomattox Chosen For
Nutrition Study
A study, aimed at finding out rwhat rural homemakers know about nutrition—and how they apply their knowledge — will get underway in Appomatox county this summer.
Miss Janet Cameron, nutritionist at VPI, says Appomattox was chosen because it is “typically rural,” unaffected by large cities, and also has a balanced white and Negro population. This fact, she explains, will make it possible to apply findings in Appomattox to , almost any other rural area.
(A similar study was conducted in Richmond in 1947, but yielded data applicable only to cities. The Appomattox -study will be- the firstof its kind in the nation.)
Some 200 families in the county will Ije asked questions concerning what they know about food selection, iwhat foods they eat, and how much of their food is produced at home.
The answers will make it possible to plan nutrition programs more efficiently Miss Cameron says.
Several agencies and organizations in thev county have representatives on tbe committee-incharge, of which Mrs. Ella Anderson, home agent, is chairman.
