Synthetic Rubber For

Arctic or Tropic

A new synthetic rubber has been developed by scientists of the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Eastern Regional Research Laboratory. This rubber not only has outstanding resistance to deterioration from heat, oil, water, wear, and agings but it also resists hardening in subzero cold. Thus, it i$ expected to prove unusually durable both in the Arctic and in the Tropics, and is especially useful for such special purposes as oil seals in automobile ^transmissions, gaskets and seals for refrigerators, freezers, , and fuel tanks. It is. considered superior for

many* of tfieee uses to either natural rubber or other synthetic rubbers.

Known as “Lactoprene BN”, the improved rubber is sipiilar to the earlier “Lactoprene EV” developed by the Laboratory and now produced commercially. The new product, however, has greater resistance to subzero temperatures and to water. Both of these synthetic rubbers are made of compounds derived from lactic acid, formed by fermenting milk or com sugars. They are simpler to produce than the well-known # butadiene rubbers, can be vulcanised without sulfur, have great endurance under repeated bending and are unusually resistant to enlargement of cuts, oxidation, and deterioration from oils.
