Apple season is upon us.

Tales are as usual. “The crop’s terrible; apples are all dropping; you can’t get any hands to work,” bt cetera.

One of these days the crop is really going to be bad, and like that old story of the boy twho cried “wolf!", no one will believe a word of it.

According to a few reports— given under the breath—the crop is pretty good; the apples aren’t dropping any worse than usual; and there are about as many pickers as usual. The packing houses are working piore than average' and the hours are long.

There’s no special explanation for the orchardist’s perpetual growl. He just enjoys it. Whenthings go too well, there might be a change for the worse; so if you growl all the time, then it’s so pleasant at the end of the season to come out on top.
