Our great American symphony orchestras to this time have had foreign leaders of our adoption, namely Koussevitsky, Stokowsky, Damroseh, the famous Dr. Karl Muck, who in. World War 1, refused to lead an American orchestra in “The Star Spangled Banner’’. Hans Kinkier was the first conductor of our National Symphony Orchestra. Some of his trained players have been a part of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, lead by William Haaker in the concerts of the first season at'Avon Mills, The Blue Ridge Music Center at Washington.
William Haaker is an American as Ipader of an American orchestra there is a brilliant future ahead of him. He was born at Albany, N.Y., of German-English lineage. While a student at Eastman School of Music, in New York he studied under Jose Iturbi. Iturbi, whose eccentricities have sometimes met with disapproval by his staid Boston critics, while delighting a packed Symphony Hall. In the movie, “A Song to Remember* the actor is seen as Chopin but Chopin's music is divinely played by Jose Iturbi in the background. - Tall, graceful and gracious, William Haaker possesses the temperamental nature of the artist.
