Judkins, V.P.I. * The soil management program, as followed in the orchard mast supply the trees with optimum amounts of moisture and nutrients to produce a large crop of high quality fruit. At the same time erosion must be controlled and the infiltration capacity of the soil maintained at a high level. As a part of the program the grower should attempt to provide a suitable surface to support heavy equipment and workers in the orchard. «
Probably the most important factor to be considered in connection with the handling of cover crops or sod in the orchard is that of supplying the trees with moisture. Most mature apple orchards in Virginia are grown with a permanent sod cover. As long as the soil allows the tree roots to develop to a depth of at least three or four feet and contains enough silt or clay to provide good water holding capacity, this system is probably the best which can be allowed.
