tihzer should be added to give dry sawdust the equivalent of 1.5 percent nitrogen. In experiments where yields have been depressed because of nitrogen deficiency, the supplemental nitrogen applications have been less than the recommended 1.5 percent. If the sawdust is several years old and partly decomposed, less nitrogen will be needed.
When sawdust is used as a mulch on the surface of the soil, there is little danger of nitrogen deficiency becoming a serious problem. If the leaves of plants growing under such conditions start to become light green or yellow a side dressing of readily available nitrogen will quickly correct the condition.
Five years of research using a oneinch layer of sawdust as a mulch for everbearing strawberries at the Ohio Experiment Station resulted in fine yields of berries and no indication of nitrogen deficiency.
