A permanent sod in the orchard gives the best possible control of erosion. This system allows rain to penetrate the soil readily, and providea a good- surface over which to haul heavy orchard equipment. In young apple orchards which have not yet developed an extensive root system, and in bearing orchards on shallow or sandy soils, the sod may compete seriously with the trees for moisture. Under such circumstances cultivation with <*over crops should be employed, or, if even a minimum amount of cultivation would encourage erosion, a sod plus mulch system
