one of the best ways to promote 'vigorous productive growth. Id a large orchard the cost of the straw or other mulching material may make the practice uneconomical. However, on shallow or droughty soils the use of mulch is to be highly recommemded wherever mater, ial for the mulch can be secured at a reasonable price. A sufficient amount should be spread under the branches of the trees to suppress the growth of grass and weeds over the rooting zone.
The roots of pfeach trees penetrate the soil much less deeply than do those of apples. For this reason the use of sod in peach orchards is usually unprofitable. On deep, well-drained yet relatively fine soils, mature peach trees may sometimes be handled successfully under a sod system. In such cases a liberal supply of nitrogen fertilizer must be applied.
In most peach orchards the best soil management system is one involving cultivation with cover crops. The overwintering cover crop of rye or wheat should be allowed to grow as long as possible in the spring to produce a heavy yield organic matter.
