Organic matter starts to decompose as soon as it is incorporated with the soil. The rate of decomposition depends on the succulence of the material as well as on the temperature, moisture content and aeration of the soil. No figures are available which can be used to estimate the speed of breakdown of sawdust under various climatic conditions. It is, however, a relatively stable type of organic matter which decomposes more slowly than most cover crops or crop residues. If sawdust is not available, fine shavings or wood chips may be employed effectively as a mulch.
