leave the cover crop in a trashy condition on the surface of the soil to help reduce soil erosion. Excessive cultivation will break down the soil structure and encourage erosion.
During: the early summer the peach orchard should be trashy cultivated occassionally to insure vigorous growth of the trees. By mid-summer a cover crop of soybeans or other vegetation may be encouraged in the orchard. This will help maintain organic matter in the soil, reduce erosion, - and when rainfall is ample, will not seriously compete with the trees for moisture. In the fall an overwintering cover crop of rye or wheat may be seeded to protect •the soil over the winter period.
If the peach orchard is located on a site where erosion is a problem, a sod plus mulch system may be followed. Excellent tree growth and yields can be secured by such a practice. As in the case of apples, one of the serious limiting factors in the use of mulch is the cost of the mulching material.
