The dry weight of the organic matter in a cubic yard of sawdust may vary from 200 pounds for softwood sawdust to 300 pounds for hardwood material. Fresh green sawdust or weathered sawdust containing moisture may weigh two or three times as much as air dry material.
Several benefits are realized when sawdust is incorporated into the soil after it has served its purpose as a mulch. Heavy soils will become lighter and easier to work whereas light soils will have a higher water-holding capacity.
