Virginia enjoys many natural advantages for being an important fruit producing state and most of the fruit growing areas need more young apple trees planted on good1 sites. At the same time, a lot of old trees shoud be removed. There are trees that are either not paying their way or are a heavy burden on the already high cost of production. Many trees should be removed by their 35th year. Pruning, spraying, and harvesting costa increase on older trees. Admittedly there is a difference of opinion as to the age when apple trees cease to be profitable. On the avrage, though, there are a lot more unprofitable than profitable apple > trees in the 35-year-old group.
