The church was formally established August 2, 1852, when Elder Cumbei-land George preached the first sermon. Elder Barnett Grimsley was chosen as the first pastor and served from 1852-1866. Human nature may not change, but customs have, as can be seen from the church records! The conduct of the church members “was closely watched, and if one’s behaviour was unbecoming to a Christian, he was wafted on by a committee appointed by the church. ” One gentleman was excluded in 1856, four years after he had signed the covenant and been elected deacon. There is some comment in this day and time that -the “waiting on” of a church committee would not be a very popular custom. “In October 1857,” states the church history, “Bister C. B. Thornton asked lor a letter of dismission giving her reason for same that ahe was satisfied she should commune with all Ghritian denominations.”
